June 2017 - California Darner visitation

According to digitalatlas.cose.isu.edu, the flight time (which is also their entire existence as a dragonfly) of the California Darner Dragonfly is Mid-April to late June.

This sighting of a California Darner Dragonfly on our Leucadendron was June 30th (2017), so the dear creature may have been close to becoming an angel California Darner.

Apparently dragonflies spend most of their lives as nymphs in ponds, lakes, and the like.  Typically, for four to five years they enjoy this stage of life, before moving from water to air; becoming beautiful dragonflies for a season.

I'm guessing my new friend here was happily dining on the resident aphids and midges spilling over from the neighboring hibiscus. We're not much on insecticides--while it's sad to see nibbled leaves, it would be sadder to see the creatures that use them for dinner plates keeled over in our yard from meals of poisoned bugs.

Thanks for visiting!
